OKcupid.com says WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange, who is in jail charged with sex crimes, maintained a profile with its online dating service, describing himself as a “pig-headed activist. Assange's digital footprints were tracked back to the free online dating site, OkCupid, this weekend by our friends at Reddit (Hattip: Village Voice).Though he goes by 'Harry Harrison' - a scifi. So, that OKCupid profile under the name “HarryHarrison” sure does look a lot like Julian Assange. (In fact, at least some, if not all, of the photos ARE Julian Assange; the one at right. This week the website Reddit claimed to have unearthed Assange's OKCupid dating profile (the veracity of the profile has yet to be confirmed). Under the pseudonym 'Harry Harrison,' the swinging. That’s right, Julian Assange may-or may not-have his own profile on dating website OKCupid. The profile, under the of name Harry Harrison, has not been logged into since Jan. 1 2007, almost four years before Assange rose to international recognition through his whistleblower website, WikiLeaks and therefore, might just be the genuine article.

The extensive team of quirky internet experts at Reddit are pretty positive they’ve discovered WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s old OKCupid dating profile. It looks shockingly legitimate. Under the name HarryHarrison, three pictures of Assange accompany an extensive profile, last accessed by the user in 2006. Assange’s location is listed as Melbourne, Australia, his age a seemingly incorrect 36 and his sexual preference as straight. There is much, much more.

Assange’s “self-summary,” in its entirety, sounds spot-on for a burgeoning revolutionary/egomaniac:

WARNING: Want a regular, down to earth guy? Keep moving. I am not the droid you’re looking for. Save us both while you still can.

Passionate, and often pig headed activist intellectual seeks siren for love affair, children and occasional criminal conspiracy.

Such a woman should spirited and playful, of high intelligence, though not necessarily formally educated, have spunk, class & inner strength and be able to think strategically about the world and the people she cares about.

I like women from countries that have sustained political turmoil. Western culture seems to forge women that are valueless and inane. OK. Not only women!

Although I am pretty intellectually and physically pugnacious I am very protective of women and children.

Asked what he’s doing with his life, the Assange profile describes “a consuming, dangerous human rights project which is, as you might expect, male dominated. Variously professionally involved in international journalism/books, documentaries, cryptography, intelligence agencies, civil rights, political activism, white collar crime and the internet.”

When prompted to explain how he spends his time, Assange is similarly grandiose:

Changing the world through passion, inspiration and trickery. Travel (33 countries). Structure of reality. Birth and death of the universe (physics background) Ontology. Chopping up human brains (neuroscience background)

In conclusion, he warns: “Do not write to me if you are timid. I am too busy. Write to me if you are brave.”

But is it real? Barring some expert fan fiction writing and hacking, yes it probably is. If the profile was indeed last accessed in 2006, it seems far too early in Assange’s ascent for anyone to be creating a fake profile, except maybe close and playful friends, which Assange doesn’t seem to have. Existence of the profile seems to have been first noted at this random Blogspot on Saturday (h/t Hunter Walker) and since, Reddit members have been obsessively looking for evidence to support its authenticity.

On the choice of HarryHarrison as a moniker, one user writes:

The most interesting thing is the choice of user name. When I saw it I jumped up and grabbed a book off the bookshelf. Harry Harrison is a scifi writer that was popular in the ’70s and ’80s for his Stainless Steel Rat character. The SSR was an intergalactic criminal mastermind with a conscious who was too smart to get caught. It’s been decades since I’ve read any of this stuff, but I may have to wave my current ban on fiction to reacquaint myself with the stories. I can instantly see why Assange would choose such a moniker.

It was easier in the old days, of course, and society had more rats when the rules were looser, just as old wooden buildings have more rats than concrete buildings. Assange appears to be an atheist.

Although many call him an anarchist, he claims he is only trying to hold governments accountable by leaking classified information.

Julian Assange was born in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. He and his parents moved and traveled around Australia in his youth, with Assange claiming he lived in “over fifty different towns.”¹

As far as I can tell, Assange appears to be an atheist, not that he would make it easy for us to say for sure. After all, as one writer said, he can be “charming yet cagey about his private life.”²

First, there’s the odd issue of his OK Cupid online dating profile. We can’t be certain that the profile, under the presumed pseudonym Harry Harrison, actually belongs to Assange, but this article makes a pretty good case that it does. Regardless, “Atheism” is listed under the religion section of Mr. Harrison’s profile.³

Then there’s the blog that he kept before he became an internationally notorious figure. In one entry he talks about going to an event filled with young Christian women, where he says he took the role of “village atheist” as they “tried to convert me with the rise and fall of their bosoms.” Then he proceeded to tell a young women, essentially, that the reason she believed in God was because she was an idiot, whereupon she apparently swooned.⁴

And finally, in a 2012 interview with Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanese Islamic militant group and political party Hezbollah, he asked,

You have fought against the hegemony of the United States. Isn’t Allah, or the notion of a God, the ultimate superpower, and shouldn’t you as a freedom fighter also seek to liberate people from the totalitarian concept of a monotheistic God?⁵

Did I mention that Hezbollah translates into “Party of God?” Anyway, I suppose that brings us to Part II.

The Inherent Danger of Secrets

Assange’s political philosophy boils mostly down to his distrust of secrets. More specifically, he thinks powerful groups of people (e.g., corporations, governments) who hold information which they will not release to the public are inherently dangerous. His goal as a journalist, and as founder of Wikileaks, is to release that information with the express purpose of weakening the power of that secretive group.⁶ (For a concise, but more in-depth discussion of his philosophy, check out this article.)

It appears then, that he has anarchist intents, does it not? By exposing government secrets, he is weakening governments. There are certainly plenty of people who do consider him an anarchist,⁷ but they do not include Assange himself. He said,

We’re an organization that goes about and has a long record all over the world of exposing abuses, by exposing concrete documentation, proof of bad behavior. That’s not anarchy. That’s what people do when they’re civil, is that they engage in organized activity that promotes justice.⁸

In other words, he’s not trying to dismantle governments, he’s just trying to guarantee that governments are acting justly by making them fully accountable to the population. It’s freedom of information, not freedom from government.

Not surprisingly, governments are not fans of Assange. His massive leaks of classified U.S. documents including a video of a military attack in Baghdad which killed, among others, unarmed civilians, children, and a Reuters journalist,⁹ prompted the U.S. Defense Department to name him an enemy of the state.¹⁰ To illustrate the political animosity towards Assange, as of the writing of this article, he was holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in the U.K. to avoid extradition orders from Sweden for sexual assault charges, with the U.S. chomping at the bit to get him in its courts.¹¹
